Nursery Hometask: Fine Motor Control Activities

Date: 10th Oct 2015 @ 9:25pm

This week we had our Stay and Play Sessions – we shared some Nursery Activities that promote fine motor control eg tweezers, cutting, peg boards and playdough.

On the Hometask sheet there are some activities the children can do at home to continue to develop these important skills, helping to build the strength and dexterity necessary to hold a pencil appropriately.

We always have playdough in Nursery. You can buy ready made tubs of dough - but here is the recipie for handmade dough that we use.

2 cups flour

1 cup water - add a few drops of food colouring of your choice

1 cup salt

1 teaspoon oil (we use baby oil - you can use cooking oil)

1 teaspoon cream of tarter

Mix - it will be very sloppy. Microwave for 2 minutes. Mix again. Microwave for another minute and stir. Depending on your microwave it may be done. If not microwave for another minute and stir. Repeat until it all sticks together.

Kneed with a little extra flour unti lyou have the texture you want.

If you take photographs of your child completing a motor control activity you can send it into Nursery and we will add it to your child's profile. Photos for profiles can always be emailed to

If your child has a favourite fine motor activity - or if you have any great ideas of your own to share - please comment on the blog.
