Reading

Reading

Reading at Sherdley is really important. We see the value in reading something for pleasure everyday.

We have been working hard to improve the reading corners in each classroom so that the children have somewhere they can go and enjoy reading a wide variety of books.

Our reading scheme

In KS1, the children follow Book Band colours which correlate to the stages of the Oxford Reading Tree scheme. Children in Reception start with Lilac and Pink books and throughout KS1, the children move through the stages reading a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts.

In KS2, the children continue to follow the Oxford Reading Tree stages until they complete Stage 16. At this stage, the children will have read a wide variety of fiction texts including classic novels, myths and legends, fantasy and science-fiction. They will also have read non-fiction texts about a range of different topics.

After Stage 16, the children are able to choose 'Free Readers'. These can be chosen from school reading areas or they may prefer to read books which they have at home. We encourage the children to read books by different authors as it enables them to pick up new vocabulary which they can use within their own writing. If you are unsure as to which authors would be appropriate for your child, please see your child's class teacher.

Listening to your child read at home

Sometimes it can be really difficult to know what questions to ask your children when you're listening to them read. We have included some suggested questions - please see the attached files.
